The Consciousness Of The Planet Earth

Listening to the song "Dark was the Night, Cold Was the ground", after multiple listening, made me wonder about the depth of this song. About how it got picked up to be one of humanity's answer to the concept of emotion in the golden record of Voyager 1.

The song is in itself is one of the best to describe the word loneliness without using any words to describe it. Just one man humming to what he felt when his soul lived on this planet. A lot of things happened around him, to make him sing a song titled 'Dark was the Night, Cold Was the ground'. By just the name, you can tell it wasn't good.

Although the origin of why the singer decided to sing the song is fully documented. But the question I asked my self is why they would decide to put this on the record as one of the greeting songs for outer species in Voyager 1?

Why this one?

The more I listened to the song the more I realized on why that is, why we had to tell the outer species about the concept of loneliness and alone. So very few people tackle it head-on then find the happiness after it than those who hide it and surround them with fake happiness because admitting loneliness makes them look vulnerable.

Earth is lonely, filled with life but nobody to share it to, everything around the earth is made of non-living things. Not appreciating what earth has to offer. How different earth is from the rest of the planets in the solar system. All the other planets don't have the ability to grasp the fact of how unusual it is for a planet to have life, about how everything came about in right order for life to be spawn.

It's like Earth is trapped in the solar system as if it's another dreamless wanderer lost in reality like every other human being walking on this planet. We're all waiting to hope for something better, we may not see the whole light, but we get happy when we the flickering light from a distance inside of a dark room.

That's why the song Dark was the Night, Cold was the ground is a perfect summarization of our entire species. Even through hardships, we always look up to see or dream of something better. The idea of having hope might not be the pragmatic solution for the problems we face every day, but it is what keeps our morals strong, strong enough to keep us going. If an alien ever gets his hands on the voyager 1.

Hope, it will grow some sort of emotion from listening to this song. Although, they will be disappointed once they see us. Because human emotion is one of the traits we hide from the world because it makes us look weak as opposed to overcoming it to climb higher.

If Earth is nothing but just a body then humans are the one its caretaker and destroyer. Humans do try their best to find the middle ground. As species, we are not powerful enough to wade off the doubt to make a rational world.

Among with all the things that Earth has to offer. Human consciousness is the best of them all. We frack for oil, But then we use the oil, to get an ambulance to help the sick in the area, where the people live without any hospitals. It does hurt the earth and makes the rich ever richer but it is one of the prices we pay for a little good in the world.
